Allotments and Community Gardens in Morpeth

Tommy's Field on the riverbank, a new organic site from Green Allotments, and how to get a plot in Morpeth.

Morpeth.net·

Morpeth has seen thousands of new-build homes in recent years, but allotment provision has not kept pace. Demand is high, waiting lists are long, and a new community-led site is being developed to help fill the gap. Here is the guide.

Allotment Sites in Morpeth

Tommy's Field Allotments is a four-acre community allotment site on the banks of the River Wansbeck, part of a wildlife corridor. It has been used by the people of Morpeth since early times and remains one of the town's most treasured growing spaces. The site is managed by Tommy's Field Allotments Limited, a community organisation.

Best for: Tommy's Field sits on four acres of riverside land and has been used for growing by Morpeth residents for generations -- one of the town's most treasured green spaces.

Morpeth Town Council Allotments -- the Town Council manages allotment plots within the town. Applications and enquiries should be directed to Morpeth Town Council, and their allotment rules and regulations are published on their website.

Green Allotments Morpeth -- a charity that completed the purchase of seven acres of fertile Grade 3 agricultural land on the edge of Morpeth in summer 2025. The land was previously used for sheep grazing and is ideal for cultivation. Green Allotments is planning a small number of non-profit allotment plots with a village allotment site appearance -- no internal fencing, grass paths between plots, no chemical fertilisers or pesticides, and no dogs (due to neighbouring sheep fields).

How to Apply

For Tommy's Field, visit tommysfield.org.uk to enquire about availability.

For Morpeth Town Council allotments, contact the Town Council directly. You can download the waiting list application form from the Alnwick Town Council website as a reference for the format, though Morpeth has its own process.

For Green Allotments, register your interest at greenallotments.org.uk -- the site is still being developed and plots may become available soon.

Waiting times are not published centrally, but demand across Northumberland is high.

What People Grow

Morpeth's climate suits hardy crops well: potatoes, onions, garlic, brassicas, leeks, runner beans, beetroot, carrots, and soft fruit. Polytunnels extend the season for tomatoes, peppers, and courgettes. The riverside location at Tommy's Field provides good soil and natural irrigation.

Community Growing

Northumberland Archives published stories from local allotment holders during National Allotments Week 2024, capturing the social as well as the horticultural value of Morpeth's growing community.
