Mitford Road Reopens After £4.6m Landslip Repair

The B6343 Mitford Road near Morpeth has reopened after a £4.6m engineering project fixed a long-standing landslip, clearing a bottleneck before the summer holidays.

One of the more frustrating bottlenecks for drivers around Morpeth has finally been cleared. The B6343 Mitford Road has reopened following a £4.6 million project to fix a long-standing landslip, and the timing could hardly be better, with the route back in use ahead of the busy summer holidays.

The road links Morpeth with Mitford and the villages beyond, and the closure had forced drivers onto longer diversions for a considerable time. Reopening it removes a daily headache for commuters, school-run families and anyone heading out into the countryside west of the town.

The fix was far from straightforward. As reported by the Northumberland Gazette, engineering teams delivered a complex solution built around a 55-metre-long, 6.6-metre-wide bridge on land, supported by 97 piles driven into difficult ground. The scheme repairs the existing damage and, crucially, safeguards the road against future undermining by the neighbouring River Wansbeck.

Best for:

The project cost rose to around £4.6m because of the challenging conditions underground, including boulders, tree roots and artesian water beneath the site.

Northumberland County Council, which led the works, had earlier said the job was on track for a summer 2026 completion, and that target has now been met. Delivering an engineered bridge structure on such awkward terrain, right beside a river, was no small feat, and the finished solution is designed to keep the road open for the long term rather than simply patching the slip.

There is one more milestone still to come. While the B6343 is now fully open to traffic, the nearby C146 High House Road is expected to reopen in mid-August, once the site compound has been removed and the land reinstated.

For now, though, a route that many Morpeth residents use without a second thought is back to normal, and with the school holidays around the corner, the return of a direct road to Mitford and the countryside beyond will be welcome news across the town.
