Morpeth.net·

Morpeth Farmers Market is one of Northumberland's best monthly markets — a gathering of local producers, artisan food makers, and independent traders in the heart of this historic market town. Held on the first Saturday of every month, it draws visitors from across the region and adds a lively buzz to an already bustling town centre.

When and Where

The farmers market takes place on the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 3pm in Morpeth Market Place (postcode NE61 1HG). It runs year-round regardless of weather, with stalls set up across the Market Place in the centre of town.

The 2026 dates are:

  • Saturday 7 February
  • Saturday 7 March
  • Saturday 4 April
  • Saturday 2 May
  • Saturday 6 June
  • Saturday 4 July
  • Saturday 1 August
  • Saturday 5 September
  • Saturday 3 October
  • Saturday 7 November
  • Saturday 5 December

Best for: First Saturday of every month, 9am to 3pm, Morpeth Market Place. Free entry, no booking needed.

What to Expect

The market brings together producers from Northumberland and the wider North East, offering a mix of food, drink, and artisan goods that you will not find in supermarkets. Typical stalls include:

  • Meat and charcuterie — locally reared beef, lamb, pork, and game from Northumberland farms, plus cured meats and sausages
  • Cheese — artisan cheeses from regional dairies
  • Baked goods — sourdough bread, pastries, cakes, and pies
  • Vegetables and fruit — seasonal produce grown locally
  • Fish and seafood — fresh catches from the Northumberland coast
  • Preserves and condiments — jams, chutneys, honey, and sauces
  • Street food — hot food stalls for eating on the spot
  • Drinks — locally roasted coffee, craft beer, gin, and fruit juices
  • Plants and flowers — seasonal plants and cut flowers from local growers
  • Crafts — handmade goods including candles, soaps, and textiles

The exact selection varies month to month as traders rotate and seasonal produce changes, which keeps the market fresh for regular visitors.

The Wednesday Market

In addition to the monthly farmers market, Morpeth holds a traditional Wednesday market in the Market Place every week. This long-established general market has been running for centuries (Morpeth received its market charter in 1199) and offers a mix of clothing, household goods, plants, and some food stalls.

The two markets complement each other well — the Wednesday market for everyday goods and the Saturday farmers market for specialist food and drink.

Tips for Visiting

Arrive early. The most popular stalls — particularly meat and baked goods — can sell out well before 3pm. If there is something specific you want, arriving between 9am and 10am gives you the best selection.

Bring bags. While some traders provide bags, bringing your own reduces waste and makes carrying purchases easier.

Take cash. Most stalls now accept card payments, but some smaller producers still prefer cash. Having both options keeps things simple.

Allow time to browse. The market is a social occasion as much as a shopping trip. Budget at least an hour to look at everything, chat to producers, and sample where offered.

Combine with lunch. The market is surrounded by Morpeth's cafes and restaurants, making it easy to grab brunch or lunch before or after your shop. Bridge Street and Sanderson Arcade are both a short walk away.

Parking

On market Saturdays, the town centre car parks fill up earlier than usual. Your best options are:

  • Staithes Lane car park — free, a 5-minute walk from the Market Place
  • Stanley Terrace — behind Sanderson Arcade, pay and display
  • Gas House Lane — free, slightly further but rarely full

Arriving before 9:30am generally avoids the worst of the parking pressure.
