Best Bakeries in Morpeth
Adam's Bakehouse, Pink Lane Bakery, and Glentons — artisan bread and cakes in Morpeth.
Morpeth has always had a decent bakery or two on Newgate Street, but the past couple of years have transformed the town into a proper destination for bread and pastries. Two artisan bakeries have opened alongside the established traditional bakers, and the result is a range that covers everything from 48-hour sourdough to cream horns and stotties.
Adam's Bakehouse
Adam's Bakehouse on Newgate Street opened in May 2025 after a successful pop-up run at Sanderson Arcade. Owner Adam Gladwin trained in Michelin-starred kitchens before spotting a gap in the market for artisan baking in Northumberland, and the quality shows.
The focus is on freshly baked sourdough, laminated pastries, and specialty coffee. The almond croissants and pain au chocolat are made from scratch each morning, and the bread selection -- including a white sourdough and a seeded loaf -- sells out regularly by early afternoon. The Morpeth shop is the second permanent site after Bedlington, with a third now open in Cullercoats.
Open Wednesday to Friday 8:30am to 3:30pm, Saturday 9:30am to 3pm.
Best for: Michelin-trained baker, artisan sourdough, laminated pastries, specialty coffee.
Pink Lane Bakery
Pink Lane Bakery at 19 Newgate Street brought its celebrated Newcastle recipe book to Morpeth, and the town is better for it. The bakery specialises in home-made bread, laminated pastries, cakes, pies, and sausage rolls, alongside takeaway barista-made coffee.
The sourdough is the headline, but the sausage rolls and the almond croissants are equally popular. Everything is made in-house using traditional techniques with no additives or improvers. They also take orders for celebration and wedding cakes.
Open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 4pm.
Best for: Sourdough, sausage rolls, celebration cakes -- a Newcastle favourite now in Morpeth.
Glentons Bakery
Glentons Bakery at 20 Newgate Street is the traditional counterpart to the artisan newcomers. Established in 2006 with their first shop in Newbiggin by the Sea, Glentons produces fresh hand-made bread, pastries, scones, cream cakes, and confectionery daily, along with hot and cold sandwiches.
This is proper Northumberland high-street baking -- stotties, sandwich loaves, cream horns, iced buns, and sausage rolls at honest prices. They also offer catering for events. Additional shops in North Seaton, Newbiggin, and Pegswood.
Best for: Traditional hand-made bread, cream cakes, and sandwich counter at high-street prices.
Cafes with Great Baking
Several Morpeth cafes carry excellent baked goods. The Chantry Pantry on Chantry Place and Gebhards Deli & Farm Shop both stock cakes and pastries from local suppliers, while the cafes around Sanderson Arcade frequently feature traybakes and scones from small-batch producers.
