Best Cocktail Bars & Drinks in Morpeth

Barluga, the Queens Head, and a new wine bar above Rossinis — where to find cocktails in Morpeth.

Morpeth.net·

Morpeth is a market town, not a cocktail destination. Nobody is coming here for speakeasy bars or mixology menus. But if you want a cocktail with your evening out, there are more options than you might expect — a contemporary bar in Sanderson Arcade, a beautifully restored coaching inn, a new wine bar, and a couple of pubs that take their drinks list seriously.

Barluga — Sanderson Arcade

Barluga in Sanderson Arcade is the closest Morpeth gets to a dedicated cocktail bar. Set across two floors with a stylish interior, it serves modern British food alongside a comprehensive cocktail menu — cosmopolitans, mojitos, Singapore slings, and more creative options like cherry lips and dirty banana.

The atmosphere is polished but relaxed, and the cocktails are a genuine draw rather than an afterthought. Wednesday to Saturday evenings are the busiest, with the kitchen open until 9-10pm and the bar staying open later. Sunday lunch is also popular.

Best for: Best cocktail selection in Morpeth, stylish setting, food and drinks done properly.

Pleased to Meet You (Queens Head)

Pleased to Meet You occupies the beautifully restored 17th-century Queens Head coaching inn on Bridge Street, dating back to 1656. It is part of the same group behind the well-known PTMY cocktail bar in Newcastle city centre.

The Morpeth venue operates as a bar, restaurant, and boutique hotel. While the food offering is the main event, the drinks list reflects the group's cocktail pedigree. Expect a considered selection of spirits, wines, and cocktails in one of the most characterful buildings in town.

Best for: Historic setting, cocktail expertise from the PTMY group, boutique hotel upstairs.

Vistas Wine Bar

Vistas Wine Bar is a relatively new addition to Morpeth's evening scene, located above Rossinis. It offers an extensive selection of wines, beers, spirits, and cocktails in a romantic setting with attractive decor. Reviewers consistently praise the friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, and reasonably priced drinks.

If you prefer wine over cocktails, this is probably your best bet in town — but the cocktail menu holds its own too.

Best for: Romantic atmosphere, wine focus with cocktails available, new on the scene.

The Black Bull

The Black Bull on Bridge Street is a Grade II listed pub with roots stretching back to at least the 1730s. It is primarily a real ale pub, but the bar is fully stocked with spirits, wines, and cocktails. The building itself has real character — low ceilings, original features, and the feel of a proper Northumberland coaching inn.

Not a cocktail bar by any stretch, but a solid option if you want a well-made drink in a historic setting.

Best for: Historic pub, full bar including cocktails, characterful interior.

The Joiners Arms

The Joiners Arms on Wansbeck Street has been serving since 1871, and its position overlooking the river and weir makes it one of the most pleasant spots for an evening drink in Morpeth. The beer garden is excellent in summer.

Again, this is a pub first and foremost — real ales and a riverside atmosphere are the main draw. But the bar carries a decent spirits and cocktail selection for those who want something mixed.

Best for: Riverside setting since 1871, beer garden, drinks with a view of the weir.

The Honest Assessment

Morpeth is not Jesmond or the city centre. If you want a dedicated cocktails night with creative menus and trained mixologists, you are better served heading to Newcastle (10 minutes by train from Morpeth station). Pleased to Meet You on High Bridge, The Alchemist, and dozens of other city centre bars offer what Morpeth cannot.

What Morpeth does offer is quality drinks in characterful settings — a coaching inn from 1656, a riverside pub from 1871, a stylish bar in a modern arcade, and a charming new wine bar. For a civilised evening out in a market town, that is more than enough.
