Best Playgrounds in Morpeth

Carlisle Park play areas, the paddling pool, and Plessey Woods — best play spots in Morpeth.

Morpeth.net·

Morpeth families are well served by one outstanding park and a handful of smaller play areas on the surrounding estates. Here is a guide to the best playgrounds in and around the town.

Carlisle Park

Carlisle Park is the main event. This multi-award-winning park sits on the south bank of the River Wansbeck in the heart of Morpeth and has two dedicated play areas -- one for younger children and one for older ones. The younger children's area has toddler swings and a gravity bowl, while the older section features larger climbing frames and a big basket swing.

What sets Carlisle Park apart is the sheer amount of other things to do alongside the playgrounds. The park has formal gardens, the William Turner Garden, an aviary, a riverside walk with stepping stones, a skate park, tennis courts, bowling greens, outdoor gym equipment, a cafe, and toilets.

Best for: Two play areas, a paddling pool, riverside walks, a cafe, and free entry all year round. The best day out for families in Morpeth.

Carlisle Park Paddling Pool

The paddling pool at Carlisle Park deserves its own mention. It is one of the few remaining outdoor paddling pools in the North East and is popular with children of all ages. The pool was refurbished in 2019 and is open daily from the second bank holiday in May until the end of the school summer holidays in September.

On warm days it gets busy, so earlier visits tend to be quieter. It is completely free to use. Bring towels and a change of clothes -- children will get thoroughly soaked.

Best for: Free outdoor paddling pool open daily from late May to September. One of the few remaining working paddling pools in the North East.

Stobhill Manor Play Area

A play area on the Stobhill Manor estate, next to Crookham Grove, has a larger range of equipment than many estate playgrounds. It is a useful option for families living on the south side of Morpeth who want something closer to home without walking into the town centre.

Stobhill Estate Play Area

A smaller play area on the Stobhill Estate, next to Tenth Avenue, was refurbished in 2016 and has a swing unit, climber, and slide. It is basic but does the job for younger children who need a quick runaround close to home.
