British Red Cross — Sanderson Arcade

The British Red Cross shop at Unit 2, Sanderson Arcade has a boutique feel compared with many charity shops. Clothing, shoes, books, CDs, DVDs, homeware, and household items are all well-displayed. Open seven days a week including Sundays 10am to 4pm.

Best for: Boutique-style shop, inside Sanderson Arcade, Sunday opening.

British Heart Foundation

British Heart Foundation at 49 Bridge Street sells second-hand clothes, books, toys, homewares, shoes, and accessories. Open Monday to Saturday 9:30am to 5pm and Sundays 10am to 4pm.

St Oswald's Hospice

All profits go to St Oswald's Hospice, which provides specialist palliative care across the region. Open Monday to Saturday 9am to 4:30pm.

Barnardo's

Barnardo's at 1 Newgate Street sits at the top of the town's main shopping street. Clothes, books, homeware, and toys. All profits support Barnardo's work with children and young people across the UK. Open seven days a week.

Best for: Newgate Street, children's charity, Sunday opening.

Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK at 30 Bridge Street stocks clothing, accessories, books, homewares, and gifts. You can shop or donate pre-loved items to fund cancer research.

Best for: Bridge Street, clothing and homeware, research charity.

Children North East

Children North East at 42 Bridge Street is the charity's first-ever shop, opened in late 2025. The shop occupies two floors and sells quality second-hand clothing, homeware, books, toys, and more. Children North East was founded in 1891 and is one of the region's oldest charities. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm (closed Monday and Sunday).

Best for: Two floors, local charity, opposite The Black Bull.

Tips

Sunday opening: British Red Cross, BHF, and Barnardo's are all open Sundays.

Best for furniture: St Oswald's Hospice on Bridge Street.
