Morpeth is one of the most dog-friendly market towns in Northumberland. With a riverside park at its heart, miles of walking trails along the Wansbeck, and a growing number of cafes and pubs that welcome four-legged visitors, it is an excellent base for dog owners — whether you live here or are visiting for the weekend.

Carlisle Park
Carlisle Park is the obvious starting point for any dog walk in Morpeth. This multi-award-winning park sits on the south bank of the River Wansbeck, with vast open fields, ancient woodland, and well-maintained paths that loop through formal gardens and up to the castle ruins on Ha' Hill.
Dogs are welcome throughout the park, and there is plenty of space to let them run. Further upriver along the pathway, you will find a gravel bed where dogs who enjoy water can splash about, and a little beyond that are the famous stepping stones — a favourite with families and dogs alike.
The Pavilion Cafe, right in the centre of the park, is dog-friendly, so you can stop for a coffee and a homemade bake without leaving your companion outside.
Best for: Off-lead space, riverside access, and a dog-friendly cafe all in one park.
Dog-Friendly Cafes
Morpeth has a surprisingly good selection of cafes that welcome dogs inside or in sheltered outdoor areas.
Pleased to Meet You and Emily's Tearoom on Oldgate both welcome dogs in designated areas. Emily's Tearoom serves coffee from Tynemouth Coffee Company alongside homemade cakes, scones, and pastries — and dogs are made just as welcome as their owners.
Made of Crumbs on Newgate Street has a cosy interior where dogs can rest beside you while you work through their impressive selection of homemade cakes.
The Old Bakehouse, tucked just off the main road, welcomes dogs in its outside seating area and serves hearty breakfasts and traditional lunches.
Cafe Vault on Newgate Street is dog-friendly with a relaxed atmosphere, serving full English breakfasts, lunches, and evening tapas.
Best for: Plenty of cafes where your dog is genuinely welcome — not just tolerated.
Dog-Friendly Pubs
Several of Morpeth's best pubs welcome dogs, particularly in their bar areas.
The Joiners Arms on Wansbeck Street has a dog-friendly public bar at the front, along with a riverside beer terrace — ideal on warmer days.
The Black and Grey on Newgate Street welcomes dogs inside and has an outside drinking area for fine weather.
St Mary's Inn, just south of the town centre at St Mary's Park, is a popular gastropub with dog-friendly areas and extensive grounds for a post-lunch walk.
Riverside Walks
The River Wansbeck provides the backbone for most dog walks in and around Morpeth. From Carlisle Park, you can follow the river upstream towards the stepping stones and beyond, or head downstream through woodland towards Mitford.
The riverside paths are largely flat and well-surfaced, making them accessible year-round. Dogs can access the water at several points along the route, and there are few roads to worry about once you are on the path.
For a longer outing, the walk from Morpeth to Mitford and back is roughly four miles and takes you through quiet countryside along the Wansbeck valley.
Nearby Countryside
Within a short drive, you have access to some of Northumberland's finest walking country. Plessey Woods, about ten miles south, has well-marked trails through ancient woodland along the River Blyth. Bolam Lake Country Park, eight miles west, offers a circular lakeside walk with open fields where dogs can run freely.
For a bigger day out, the Northumberland coast at Druridge Bay has seven miles of sand where dogs can run off-lead for most of the year — a real treat on a clear day.
Practical Tips
Most of Morpeth's green spaces ask that you keep dogs on leads near play areas and wildlife habitats, and clean up after them. Dog waste bins are plentiful in Carlisle Park and along the main riverside paths.
If you are visiting and need supplies, there are pet shops in town, and most of the town centre car parks are within easy walking distance of the park and river.
