Things to Do in Morpeth: A Complete Guide

From Carlisle Park and the Bagpipe Museum to farmers' markets and riverside walks — everything worth doing in Morpeth, Northumberland.

Morpeth.net·

Morpeth is a handsome market town on the River Wansbeck in Northumberland, about 15 miles north of Newcastle. It's compact enough to explore on foot, with a surprising amount packed into a small area — a medieval castle, one of only a handful of bagpipe museums in the world, a beautiful riverside park, independent shops, and a proper farmers' market. Here's what's worth your time.

Carlisle Park

The jewel of Morpeth. Carlisle Park sits on the south bank of the Wansbeck, stretching from the castle ruins to the riverbank. The park has formal gardens, a children's play area, tennis courts, a skate park, and rowing boats on the river in summer. The Turner Garden — a walled garden with vibrant flower beds — is particularly good in late spring and summer.

Free to enter, open year-round.

Best for: Riverside park, rowing boats, play area, Turner Garden, free entry.

Morpeth Chantry and the Bagpipe Museum

The Chantry is a 13th-century building on the bridge over the Wansbeck, now home to the Morpeth Bagpipe Museum — one of only a few dedicated bagpipe museums anywhere. The collection covers Northumbrian smallpipes, border pipes, and instruments from around the world. The Northumbrian Arts and Crafts Gallery is also housed here.

A genuinely unusual attraction and worth half an hour even if you have no particular interest in bagpipes. Free entry.

Best for: 13th-century building, Northumbrian smallpipes, free, unique.

Morpeth Castle

The castle gatehouse on Ha' Hill above the town is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade I listed building. It dates from the 14th century and offers views over the Wansbeck valley. The castle grounds are open to the public and make a pleasant short walk from the town centre.

Best for: Medieval gatehouse, hilltop views, free access, short walk from town.

Morpeth Farmers' Market

Held on the first Saturday of every month in the town centre, Morpeth's Farmers' Market brings together local food producers selling meat, cheese, baked goods, preserves, plants, and seasonal produce. It's one of the better farmers' markets in Northumberland and a good reason to visit on a Saturday morning.

Check our events calendar for exact dates.

Best for: First Saturday monthly, local produce, town centre.

Morpeth Wednesday Market

The traditional Wednesday market has run in Morpeth for centuries, granted by charter in 1199. Stalls line the marketplace selling fresh produce, clothing, household goods, and baked items. A smaller affair than the farmers' market but a genuine piece of market town life.

Best for: Historic market charter since 1199, every Wednesday, town centre.

Sanderson Arcade

For shopping, Sanderson Arcade offers a mix of high street and independent retailers in a covered arcade off Bridge Street. Regular live music events and monthly themed markets add some atmosphere. It's a cut above the average small-town shopping centre.

Best for: Covered shopping, independent and high street mix, live events.

Walking the Wansbeck

The riverside path along the Wansbeck is one of Morpeth's best features. You can walk east from Carlisle Park through woodland along the river for a gentle couple of miles. In spring the riverbanks are thick with bluebells and wild garlic. The stepping stones at Bothal are a popular destination for families.

Best for: Riverside walks, bluebells in spring, Bothal stepping stones.

Family Attractions Nearby

Whitehouse Farm (about 5 miles north) is an all-weather family attraction with soft play, outdoor play areas, tractor rides, and animals to feed and hold. Good for younger children.

Druridge Bay (about 10 miles east) offers a long stretch of golden sand, a country park with a lake, and cycling and walking routes. One of the best beaches in Northumberland.

Northumberlandia (about 8 miles south) is a unique 19-acre park featuring a massive earth sculpture of a reclining female figure, best appreciated from the viewing platforms. Free entry and good walking paths.

Best for: Whitehouse Farm for families, Druridge Bay beach, Northumberlandia sculpture.

The essentials: Carlisle Park and the Bagpipe Museum are free and walkable from anywhere in the town centre. The farmers' market (first Saturday) is the best day to visit for food. The riverside walk east towards Bothal is the best walk. And if you have children, Whitehouse Farm is worth the short drive.
