Where to Park in Morpeth
A practical guide to car parks in Morpeth town centre — including free options, time limits, and tips for market days.
One of the genuine perks of Morpeth compared to larger towns is that council-run car parks are free. There are no ticket machines to feed and no charges to worry about — just time limits to be aware of. Here is everything you need to know.
Short Stay: Stanley Terrace
The most convenient car park for the town centre is Stanley Terrace, immediately behind Sanderson Arcade. It is free, but limited to a maximum stay of three hours (no return within four hours), Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm.
You will need a parking disc — these can be picked up free from shops in Sanderson Arcade and elsewhere in the town centre. Set the disc to your arrival time and display it on your dashboard. Disabled badge holders can park without a time limit.
Stanley Terrace is the obvious choice if you are popping in for shopping, a coffee, or a quick errand. The entrance to Sanderson Arcade is right there, and Bridge Street is a two-minute walk through the arcade.
Best for: Stanley Terrace is free for up to 3 hours. Pick up a parking disc from Sanderson Arcade.
Long Stay: Staithes Lane
If you need longer than three hours — perhaps for a full day's work, a long lunch, or a proper wander — Staithes Lane Long Stay Car Park is the one to use. It is also free and allows parking for up to 24 hours, though you must leave for at least four hours before returning.
Opening hours are 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Be aware that vehicles left in the car park at closing time will be locked in until the following morning.
Staithes Lane is a short walk from the town centre — around five minutes on foot.
Other Car Parks
Morpeth has several other council-run car parks, all free with time controls:
- Gas House Lane — open 8am to 6pm daily. A useful alternative close to the river and Carlisle Park.
- Morpeth Railway Station — the exception to the free rule. This is a pay and display car park, allowing stays of up to 72 hours. Useful if you are catching a train.
All council car parks are managed by Northumberland County Council. Full details and maps are available on the council's parking page.
Market Day Tips
Morpeth's Wednesday market draws visitors from across Northumberland, and the town centre gets noticeably busier. Stanley Terrace fills up quickly on market mornings, so if you are planning a Wednesday visit:
- Arrive early — before 9:30am for the best chance of a space at Stanley Terrace.
- Use Staithes Lane if the town centre car parks are full. The walk in is short and pleasant.
- The monthly Farmers Market (first Saturday of each month) also increases demand. The same advice applies.
Outside of market days, parking in Morpeth is rarely a problem. Even on a busy Saturday, you will usually find a space without circling.
On-Street Parking
There are some on-street bays on and around Bridge Street, but these are limited and tend to fill early. Most have short time limits. For anything longer than a quick drop-off, the car parks are a better bet.
