About Northumberland Cheese Company

Northumberland Cheese Company is an independent artisan cheesemaker based at The Cheese Farm at Blagdon, a few miles south of Morpeth. The business traces its roots to 1984, when founder Marc Robertson began making a sheep's milk cheese, Redesdale, on Soppit Farm at Elsdon in the county's uplands. As the range grew to take in cow's and goat's milk cheeses, the company moved to its larger Blagdon site in 1996, where its small team still hand-makes cheese on the farm. The current range includes the Northumberland Original, the bestselling Nettle, a Smoked cheese, the Elsdon goats' cheese and the Redesdale ewes' cheese, all of which are pasteurised and suitable for vegetarians.

The farm is set up for visitors as well as wholesale. The Cheese Loft Café and Farm Shop are open Tuesday to Sunday, serving food alongside the full range of cheeses to buy, and the dairy itself can be seen on a guided Dairy Tour booked in advance. It makes an easy detour on the way in or out of Morpeth, whether you are after a wedge of local cheese for the weekend or a leisurely lunch. Opening hours can change around holidays, so it is worth checking the website or calling ahead before a special trip.
