About Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum

The Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum is housed in the Chantry, a historic building on Bridge Street in Morpeth. Founded in 1987, it holds a large collection of historic bagpipes, especially Northumbrian smallpipes and Border pipes, together with a substantial collection of bagpipe music in print and manuscript. The collection is mainly based on that of William Alfred Cocks (1892-1971) and also includes his photographs and press cuttings relating to bagpipes. It was previously housed in the Black Gate in Newcastle before moving to Morpeth. The museum survived the severe flooding of central Morpeth in 2008 and reopened in 2009. Entry is free, with donations welcomed.
